The Highlander reboot could be in trouble. Summit and producers Neal Moritz and Peter Davis have been searching for a new director since Juan Carlos Fresnadillo) exited last year, and now they need a new star. According to The Wrap, Ryan Reynolds has bailed as “Connor MacLeod, an immortal Scottish swordsman forced to confront the Kurgan, a brutal barbarian who lusts for the fabled ‘Prize.’” I’ve been down on the project since it has been announced, and Reynolds as the lead sounded unbearable. With no director and no lead in place, it could be awhile before this one gets off the ground . . . if ever.

I loved Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, but Fox has been seemingly lethargic about getting a sequel in development. The film’s $403 million dollar worldwide gross is impressive for an R-Rated sci-fi thriller, but the budget was reportedly in the $130 million range. According to Variety, Jack Paglen has been tapped by Fox and Ridley Scott to pen the follow-up. Paglen recently completed the script for Trancendence starring Johnny Depp. Earlier this year, Damon Lindelof announced he would not return to write the sequel. Per the report, Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender are expected to reprise their roles, but it’s unclear if Scott will return to direct, or just produce this time around. The direction the sequel is headed is unknown at this time, but the follow-up will reported be a stand-alone film and will not feature elements linking it to the Alien franchise. Could Elizabeth Shaw and David be headed for the Engineers’ home planet?

Well . . . this sucks. Robert Rodriguez’s Sin City: A Dame To Kill For has been pushed back almost a year after originally being slated for an October 2013 release. The Weinstein Company announced that thelong-awaited has been pushed back to August 22, 2014. I was hoping we would be seeing a trailer soon, but I guess that’s not happening. A Dame To Kill For was one of the few bright spots in the Fall 2013 movie slate. Oh well . . .

Kick-Ass, Hit Girl and Red Mist return for the follow-up to 2010’s irreverent global hit: Kick-Ass 2. On the heels of the success of Warner Bros./DC’s Man of Steel, Sony/Marvel is laying the groundwork for a rather lengthy future for Spider-Man. Via a press release, Sony announced The Amazing Spider-Man 3 will hit theaters in 2016 and The Amazing Spider-Man 4 will arrive in 2018. With The Amazing Spider-Man 2 set for release in 2014, this means we will get a Spider-Man film every two years. The web-slinger proved to still be a hot commodity after Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man grossed just over $750 million dollars worldwide in 2012. Electro and Rhino are locked in as the villains for the follow-up, but this news likely means Spider-man is headed for an epic showdown with the Green Goblin (or the Hobgoblin). Perhaps this gives Webb enough time to work the Sinister Six into the story . . .

CULVER CITY, Calif., June 17, 2013 – With Sony Pictures Entertainment now in production in New York on The Amazing Spider-Man™ 2, slated for release on May 2, 2014, the studio is planting its flag on two future release dates for one of the most successful franchises in studio history, it was announced today by Jeff Blake, Chairman, Worldwide Marketing and Distribution for Sony Pictures. The next two films in the story of Peter Parker will be released on June 10, 2016, and on May 4, 2018, respectively.

Commenting on the announcement, Blake said, “Spider-Man is our most important, most successful, and most beloved franchise, so we’re thrilled that we are in a position to lock in these prime release dates over the next five years.”

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci & Jeff Pinkner, with a previous draft by James Vanderbilt, and based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are the producers. The executive producers are E. Bennett Walsh, Stan Lee, Alex Kurtzman, and Roberto Orci.

The Amazing Spider-Man took in over $750 million at the worldwide box office last year.

Paramount has unveiled the first trailer for Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street. The film instantly finds itself on my “must-see” list, and there’s no reason it shouldn’t be on yours. The film opens November 15th and stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Kyle Chandler, Matthew McConaughey, Jean Dujardin, Margot Robbie, Jon Bernthal, and Rob Reiner.

Although the first Hot Tub Time Machine set photos (via The Daily Mail)are rather uneventful, it’s nice to see our favorite (and only) hot tub time travelers. The boys (sans John Cusack) are headed 10 years into the future this time around, and Adam Scott is playing Cusack’s son.

Julian (Gosling) lives in exile in Bangkok where he runs a Thai boxing club as a front for the family’s drugs smuggling operation. When Julian’s brother Billy is killed their mother, Jenna (Kristin Scott Thomas), arrives in the city. She wants revenge and forces Julian to find the killer. Julian’s contacts in the criminal underworld lead him directly to The Angel of Vengeance, a retired police officer who knows everything and who is both Judge and Punisher. Jenna demands that Julian kill The Angel of Vengeance, an act that will cost him dearly.

Catching you up on the latest happenings in Hollywood . . .

-Per The Wrap, Thomas McCarthy (The Station Agent, The Visitor, Win Win) wants Matt Damon to star in his next film that centers around the Catholic Church’s sex abuse scandal. The film will follow the uncovering of the scandal as a result of “a year-long investigation by the Boston Globe’s spotlight team, which interviewed victims and reviewed thousands of pages of documents. Their reporting eventually led to the resignation of Cardinal Bernard Law, who hid years of serial abuse by other priests, and opened the floodgates to other disturbing revelations around the world.”

-Adam Sandler will star in the supernatural thriller Hello Ghost for director Chris Columbus. According to THR, the story centers on a man who, “after attempting to kill himself, is plagued by the arrival of four ghosts. They won’t leave him in peace until he helps them amend their past by granting them one wish.” Sounds terrible . . .

-In somewhat unsurprising news, Arnold Schwarzenegger will show up in The Expendables 3. Arnold revealed to TheArnoldFans that he will be reprising his role as Trench and filming begins in L.A. this August.

-Deadline has confirmed that John C. Reilly will play Rhomman Dey in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

-Star Magazine (via Digital Spy): “After dying [Fox's] mane red for her role as April O’Neil in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle remake, producers hated the result and sent her back to the salon for a redo, which wreaked havoc on her once-lush locks. She went to a different stylist, and they ended up using a metallic hair dye that reacted to the initial product. Next thing you know, her hair started falling out in clumps!”

-Gene Wilder on Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: “I think it’s an insult . . .  It’s probably Warner Bros.’ insult . . . Johnny Depp, I think, is a good actor, but I don’t care for that director,” Wilder said. “He’s a talented man, but I don’t care for him doing stuff like he did.”
