Michael Keaton On Batman: “I Didn’t Even See Much Of The Second One That I Did”

Comic Book Updatesby Eric Draven @marvelanddcnews

Some people weren’t crazy about Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, but I always found it to be one of the most underrated live-action film in the Batman canon. The film currently has a 78% on the Michael Keaton On BatmanTomatometer, and is the second lowest grossing film in the franchise (with Batman & Robin obviously being the lowest grossing installment). Michael Keaton hasn’t talked about the character much in the past, but the subject came up during an interview on the WTF With Marc Maron podcast. Keaton has a few amusing responses and even reveals that he didn’t appear in the third film because he wanted to do an origin story. Here are the excerpts:

“I was familiar with the TV show, but I didn’t know the whole comic, the pulpy part of it.”

“He’s ridiculously depressed. He’s a vigilante. He’s got this issue…”

The guy who’s doing them now, Chris Nolan, he’s so talented, it’s crazy . . . “But I say that like I’ve seen them, and I actually haven’t. I didn’t even see much of the second one that I did.”

You look at where he went, which is exactly what I wanted to do when I was having meetings about the third one. I said you want to see how this guy started. We’ve got a chance here to fix whatever we kind of maybe went off. This could be brilliant. Didn’t want to do it, so I didn’t want to do it.”
