I not sure anyone expected Rise of the Planet of the Apes to gross $481 million dollars worldwide AND be well received by critics (83% on the Tomatometer). On May 24th, 2014, Rupert Wyatt will return to the director’s chair for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
Considering we are a little less than two years away from the film, details are scarce regarding the film’s premise. The end of Rise (spoiler alert – even though you should have seen the movie by now) had the apes returning to the Redwood forest shortly after Caesar speaks to James Franco’s character for the first time. Will we see the apes prepare for world domination? Will we see the war between humans and apes? One thing you can bet on is that the sequel will not end by leading up to the events of Planet of the Apes. The studio is likely going to want to leave enough room to tell at least one more story. Total Film caught up with Rise writer/producer Rick Jaffa and he addressed and element that we are likely NOT to see in the sequel . . . time-travel. Time-travel has played a major part in previous installments (especially Tim Burton’s remake), but it will not be part of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. It will be interesting to see how they work it into the series down the line. Here is what he had to say regarding the film:
“I don’t foresee that. But it’s interesting you should ask that, because it’s the one big element that we made a conscious decision not to explore in the first one, and we were worried that there might be some backlash in the science fiction community because of it. When the story first came together we were very, very excited, and yet before we pitched it, I thought, ‘The one thing missing though is time travel. But it’s not necessary for this particular telling’. And I don’t really foresee it, to tell you the truth.”
