The Expendables 2 is expected to similar business as the first picture when it opens this Friday. The first film opened with $34 million dollars, and went on to gross $274 million dollars worldwide. It’s not a complete surprise to hear a third film is already in the works. According to Producer Avi Lerner, the entire cast has agreed to return, and Nicolas Cage has signed on to appear in a third film. Lionsgate has yet to give the greenlight, but I would expect it soon, unless the film is a major disaster. I could see Cage coming on-board as a big time villain in the third film (maybe he can use the Jamaican accent he wanted to do in The Green Hornet). Lerner also reveals (via Total Film), there are a couple of other names on the radar (and they are huge):
We’ve approached Clint Eastwood to be one of the guys, we’ve got a character in mind for him. We’re talking to Harrison Ford. [And we want] Wesley Snipes when he comes back from prison. I’ll give you one more name, we’ve got Nicolas Cage to play [one of the characters].”
“And we’re going to bring Mickey Rourke back, if he won’t be too crazy. I like Mickey. And of course, all the existing stars [will return]”
