Did you just say to yourself, “There is going to be a Raging Bull II?” Unfortunately, this is not a joke. The film is currently lensing in Los Angeles without the involvement of Martin Scorsese or Robert De Niro (surprised?). The follow-up serves as both a prequel and a sequel to the 1980 classic. The film is expected to be released sometime in 2013. The film will follow LaMotta from his youth (played by newcomer Mojean Aria), and then jumping forward to ages 34 to 73 (William Forsythe), the film’s cast also includes Joe Mantegna, Natasha Henstridge, Penelope Ann Miller, and Tom Sizemore.
William Forsythe on the reaction to the sequel: Asked recently about the uproar against tackling the story again, Forsythe replied, “I understand that because it’s such an iconic, beautiful and amazing first film — one of the great films maybe of all time. But our story has a lot more heart and I think it’s a beautiful depiction of who Jake really is.”
Martin Scorsese on the sequel: “At the end of ‘Raging Bull,’ [Jake La Motta is] looking in a mirror and he’s at comfort with himself. He’s not fighting, he’s not beating himself up. That’s all. So, I don’t know where they’re going to go. I really don’t know what ‘Raging Bull II’ would be.”
